Nairobi to Kisumu
March 10, 2012
Today we traveled from Nairobi to Kisumu, where we will spend the majority of our visit. Kisumu is a town of about 400,000 on Lake Victoria. We will be working with schools in the area.
President Obama's Grandma lives about one hour from Kisumu. I learned today that Kenyans never sell their birthplace. They may move away and live in the city, but they are tied to the land where they are born, and when they grow old they will move back and be buried there.
We had a wonderful trip today. It took about six hours by SUV. We passed through many small villages and a variety of terrain. The Rift Valley was amazing, it is a huge valley surrounded by a couple of volcanos. The Maasai tribe reside here, they are herdsmen and women and wear very bright clothing. We saw goats, sheep, cattle, donkeys and A HERD OF ZEBRA ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD!!!! I was so dumbstruck I didn't get a pic.
People walk to the village each day and so there are always people walking along the side of the road. The women carry goods on their heads (I would have a constant headache and would continually need to pick up my goods from the ground, but they are very graceful and strong.) One will see four people on a motorcycle, three people on a bicycle along with 20 gallons of water. They are very resourceful.
(Still can't upload my pictures so I'll share them when I get it figured out...sorry for the delay.)
Lesson of the day: I was blessed to see that there are some places where people do not wear watches and life is not ruled by a clock, people are not in a hurry -- and life still manages to go on!
